The Pennsylvania Humanities Council designated the year 1985 as "The Year of the Pennsylvania Writer." The PHC funded projects in eight locations throughout the Commonwealth to gain appreciation, understanding, and recognition for past and present Pennsylvania writers. Phi Sigma Kappa was founded in 1873 at the University of Massachusetts, based on the three cardinal principles--the Promotion of Brotherhood, the Stimulation of Scholarship, and the Development of Character. The Kappa Chapter of the Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity was founded at Pennsylvania State College in 1899. Its official motto is the golden rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
