Decennial enumeration 8, 1860.

Series 1 of record group 65-14 consists of federal census records of the 1860 census for Saint Joseph County, Michigan. Includes schedules 1, and 3-6 (inhabitants, mortality, productions in agriculture, products of industry, and social statistics). The schedules for inhabitants and mortality provide information of residents of the county, both living and those who died during the census year. Products of industry includes information such as the name of the business; kind of manufacture or product; capital invested; number of employees; their salaries and hours; length of time in operation; machines and power sources used; and materials consumed and goods produced. Products in agriculture includes information on the farm owner; acreage; value of farm; machinery; number and type of livestock; and amount and type of produce and crops. Social statistics includes information on schools, churches and libraries, including school name; number of teachers and their salaries; school attendance; church name and seating capacity; name of library and number of volumes held.
