The accounts of approximately 70 ships are recorded in this ledger. Owned by James E. Whitney and Lawrence B. Cushing, Whitney, Cushing & Co. traded with Calcutta on consignment for Kidder, Peabody & Company, transfer agents in Boston. Both American and British ships are represented in this ledger; typically the American ships sailed to Boston and the British ships sailed to New York, all of which originated in Calcutta. Items carried by the ships included East India rubber, spices, tanned and untanned goat, cow, and sheep skins/hides, cutch (a brown dye used in tanning), saltpetre, gunny and jute bags, linseed oil, shellac, indigo and fishing poles.
