Bard to his sister Beryl Bard on the possible connection of Frederick William Seward to the elder Bard's time in California; essays on encounters with Tiburcio Vasquez by a Mrs. De Nure and William Whittemore; and various memoirs on Ventura from about the 1860s to 1880s by Whittemore (including an account of catching California condors), Carrie Hicks, E. M. Sheridan (including an account of the murder of T. Wallace More in 1877), and Hugh Warring.

Thomas Robert Bard (1841-1915), U.S. Senator from California from 1900 to 1905 and president of the Union Oil Company, was born in Pennsylvania where he studied law. He came to California in 1865 to take charge of the large land holdings of eastern owners in Ventura County and was instrumental in the subsequent development of land and petroleum in the area.
