George C. Marshall signed card with quotation, circa 1940-1945.

The collection consists of a card, signed by Marshall as Chief of Staff, with his printed quotation, "We are determined that before the sun sets on this terrible tragedy, Our Flag will be recognized throughout the World as a symbol of Freedom on the one hand and of Overwhelming Power on the other," in reference to Pearl Harbor, originally delivered during an address at West Point.

George Catlett Marshall (b. December 31, 1880, Uniontown, Pennsylvania-d. October 16, 1959, Washington, D.C.), had a long and auspicious career in the United States (U.S.) Army and to the United States. He graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1901 and served his country as U.S. Secretary of State, Secretary of Defense, Envoy to China, Army Chief of Staff, and as President of the American Red Cross.
