W.W. Denslow was born May 5, 1856, In Philadelphia, PA, and died March 29, 1915. He married Annie McCartney in 1882, divorced her, and married Ann Waters Holden in 1896. After divorcing her he married Frances Golsen Doolittle in 1903. He studied at the Cooper Union Institute and the National Academy of Design, both in New York City. James Carter Beard was born in Cincinnati, educated at Miami University of Ohio, and studied law under Rutherford B. Hayes. He was admitted to the bar, but pursued a career as an artist instead, following the tradition of his father and siblings. He taught briefly, served in the Civil War as a hundred days soldier, and found success as an illustrator, eventually moving to New York, where he worked as a staff artist for Scribner's and Appleton's.
