Negative photostats of two letters sent from James Buchanan in the U.S. State Department to John Black and Thomas O. Larkin. The letter to Larkin was sent along with a package for John Charles Frémont, and the letter addressed to Black originally accompanied a communication for Larkin. The letters appear to have been copied by hand, probably by Josiah Royce, who also included notes on the Larkin letter.
