Thomas R. Cornelius papers [manuscript], 1833-1870.

Collection includes handwritten list of births, deaths, and marriages of family members, a handwritten note about his lineage, miscellaneous bills and receipts, and correspondence. Letters includes a letter to his wife from Camp Yackimak, Apr. 3, 1856, and a letter from Amory Holbrook defending himself against charges in the "Oregonian," Nov. 24, 1860. Microfilm reel is from the T.R. Cornelius Papers, 1831-1886, concerning Cayuse and Yakima Indian wars, transportation (including Oregon Steam Navigation Company and the Oregon Central Railroad), and business matters.

Thomas R. Cornelius (1827-1890), emigrated to Oregon from Mississippi with his family in 1845 as a member of the Meek party. He participated in the Cayuse War of 1847-48 and the Yakima War of 1855-56 and served in the Oregon State Legislature for twenty years. In 1861 he was made a colonel by the U.S. War Department and ordered to raise a volunteer regiment, the Oregon First Cavalry, which he commanded at Ft.
