Benjamin Carroll Tharp (1885-1964) was a botanist, born in Pankey, Grimes County, Texas. He earned his B.A (1914) and M.A. (1915) from the University of Texas. He served as plant pathologist at the Texas Department of Agriculture, 1915 to 1917, and associate professor of biology at Sam Houston Normal Institute, 1917 to 1919, before joining the University of Texas faculty as a botany instructor. Bowman became President of the Johns Hopkins University in 1935 and retired in 1948. During World War II Bowman served on the Policy Committee of the State Department and as Special Advisor to the Secretary of State.
