Otto Goetze collection, 1898-1909.

The collection consists of 513 black and white negatives taken by Otto Daniel Goetze. The collection encompasses the period from 1898 through 1909. Images in the collection include the Nome Gold Rush, Alaska Natives, particularly Eskimos from the Nome area, the city of Nome, Alaska, ships and shipping, and Southeast Alaska. The majority of the negatives in the collection are glass plates ranging in size from 5 x 7 inches to 8 x 10 inches.

Otto D. Goetze was born in Missouri in 1871 to a German immigrant family of twelve children. Goetze left Missouri as a young man, moving to Walla Walla, Wash., then to Oregon, and later to Seattle. Goetze went to Alaska around 1898 as the Gold Rush began and established a photography studio in Nome.
