A graduate of the University of Alberta in 1930. Gowan became a noted playwright and author who wrote stage, television and radio plays. She served as chief factor at Fort Edmonton and received an Honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Alberta in 1982. She was instrumental in bringing live theatre to Edmonton and taught drama and radio writing at the Banff School of Fine Arts and at Queen's University summer school.
