The 20th Commemoration of the Kent State shootings, held in 1990, remains one of the largest-attended of all the annual gatherings. Preparations had begun a few years in advance, culminating in the creation of the May 4 20th Anniversary Commission, at the behest of President Michael Schwartz, in 1989. Since its founding, Kent State University has offered classes at numerous locations throughout Northeast and Central Ohio. From 1912 into the 1960's, Kent offered extension classes in the afternoons and evenings, mostly in urban areas, with curricular offerings focusing on K-12 teacher education.
