The papers contain the diary of Jennie (Hannah Jane?) Stouffer of Chambersburg, Pa., 1855-1856, describing studies and social activities at school and on vacation Her penmanship book, n.d. is also present. A letter from "Amelia," Staunton, Va., to her brother "Eddie," 1869 December 11, describes life at the school [for freedmen?] where she teaches including a visit by an elderly Indian doctor who was formerly a slave in Florida and an anticipated exhibition by the "colored people" in which she is preparing her scholars to participate. (Included in the on-line Valley of the Shadow project). A letter from Martha Anna Bruce, Staunton, Va., to Belle Stewart, 1898 March 27, conveys family news and describes events at school including a humorous lecture by General [John B.?] Gordon on "Last days of the Confederacy."
