James Madison letters [manuscript], 1814-1826.

An unsigned draft, circa 1814, authorizes Peter Hagner to fill the office of Accountant to the War Dept. following John Armstrong's dismissal of William Simmons. A draft letter to an unidentified recipient, 1816 April, concerns the disappearance of a youth named Ambrose Rose. Madison informs the recipient that the boy may have tried to go to sea and asks him to check all the vessels at his port and detain the youth until his father can be notified. The draft is written on the verso of note from John W. Taylor declining a dinner invitation. A letter to John Payne Todd enquires as to the causes of his long absence and silence and reminds him of the grief his behavior is causing Dolley Madison.

John Payne Todd was the son of Dolley Payne and her first husband, John Todd. After Todd's death, Dolley Payne married President James Madison, making John Payne Todd Madison's stepson.
