Leadbeatter family papers [manuscript], 1861-1865.

The collection contains Civil War correspondence of the Leadbetter family, particularly Henry L. Leadbetter. Letters discuss life in camp and at home. There is also a tribute to General Jackson by Salli Leadbetter. Union documents include a letter from W. A. Nichols, Asst. Adjt Genl., U. S. to Capt. G. G. Huntt, 4th U. S. Cavalry at Fort Laramie, concerning funds for bounty payments and a letter in reply to General Lorenzo Thomas, 1863 March 13 and April 9; a note from Col. R. E. Clary to General M. C. Meigs, 1864, enclosing an estimate of funds for Memphis, Tenn.; and a statement of ordnance and ordnance stores for the 4th U. S. Cavalry, 1864, compiled by Lt. James Callehan.

Montgomery C. Meigs was an army officer and engineer. He was born in Augusta, Ga. on May 3, 1816. Meigs graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1836, where he studied civil and military engineering. Thomas was born in New Castle, Delaware. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1823, and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the 4th U.S. Infantry.
