Notes on the grand tour [manuscript}, 1788 February.

Jefferson's notes on the "grand tour" were prepared at Paris for Thomas Lee Shippen and John Rutledge, Jr., two guests of Jefferson's in Paris. Jefferson notes the best road, the preferred lodging place and places of interest to view. He advises on money, dining, and what notable features of the country or habits of the people to observe : "On entering the Prussian dominions, remark the effect of despotism on the people." Of interest are his eight "Objects of attention for an American" : agriculture, mechanical arts, lighter mechanical arts and manufactures ("circumstances rendering it impossible that America should become a manufacturing country during the time of any man now living, it would be a waste of attention to examine these minutely."), gardens, architecture, painting and statuary, politics, and courts.
