Some American writers and the Civil War [manuscript], 1960.

An address delivered to the Virginia Library Association. Barrett discusses authors influenced by the Civil War including Ambrose Bierce, Sidney Lanier, John Esten Cooke, John W. DeForest, Mark Twain, and George Washington Cable, all of whom served; older writers William Gilmore Simms, Nathaniel Hawtorne, and Herman Melville; diplomats Henry James and William Dean Howells; and hospital nurse Walt Whitman. The collection contains both the manuscript of the address and a printed version from the newsletter.
