Randall Jarrell (6 May 1914 – 14 October 1965), the noted American poet, literary critic, children's author, essayist, and novelist, was born in Nashville, Tennessee. He attended Vanderbilt University where he studied under Robert Penn Warren, Allen Tate, and John Crowe Ransom, edited the student humor magazine, captained the tennis team, received a Phi Beta Kappa and graduated magna cum laude. American novelist, short-story writer, lawyer, historian and critic Louis Auchincloss (1917- ) was born in Lawrence, New York. Auchincloss attended Yale University from 1935 to 1939 and was an editor of the Yale Literary Magazine during his studies there. Auchincloss graduated from the University of Virginia Law School in 1941. While practicing law in New York State from 1941 to 1986, he penned many of his novels and short stories.
