The letters deal with her education and social activity in Washington, supervised by her aunt and uncle, Senator Thomas Hart Benton, and Elizabeth McDowell Benton; her marriage to Gov. Francis Thomas of Maryland, 1841; the divorce in 1845 and libel suit on him in 1847; her second marriage to Rev. John Miller, founder of Millerites, Confederate Veteran, and Presbyterian minister at Petersburg, Va. and Princton, N.J. Some letters of James McDowell, Jr. as student at Univ. of Virginia, 1838-40.
