Papers of Alexander Balmain and the Balmain family [manuscript], 1776-1895.

The papers consist chiefly of the correspondence of Alexander Balmain and Balmain family legal documents. Betty Balmain and Abram Hite are correspondents. In addition the collection contains papers or correspondence of Hudson Martin, Wilson Cary Nicholas, Edmund Randolph, John Charles Randolph Taylor, Bennett Taylor, and the Taylor family. The collection also contains the journal of John Bruce, 1836-1854, transcripts of the same, and lists of students at the Winchester Academy, with notes on Natural Philosophy kept by Bruce and miscellaneous Bruce family papers. The collection also contains some Balmain family legal documents; three items pertaining to the Winchester Colonization Society, including a brief minute book; a "chart of distances from Winchester, Va., and some miscellaneous printed materials.
