Papers of the Hammond family [manuscript] 1751-1937.

The papers of the Reverend Kensey Johns Hammond constitute the bulk of the collection. They consist primarily of correspondence regarding church and family affairs, and his diaries, 1879-1936. The latter contain a record of his church activities dating from his student days at the Theological Seminary of Virginia through his service at parishes in Franklin and Calverton, Md., mission work in West Virginia, and pastorates at Immanuel, Wilmington, Del., and St. Stephen's Culpeper, Va. In addition to records of pastoral acts, vestry meetings, and church events, he describes his vacations, convention trips, family events, books read, and daily activities. Completing the diaries are doctrinal notebooks, sermons, parish leaflets, 1885-1898, genealogical research, clippings, and photographs of churches, family, and friends. Earlier papers of the Hammond and Johns families contain personal correspondence regarding daily activities, and the diary, 1885-98, of Julia Johns Hammond. Correspondents include Pierre Samuel DuPont and Charles Carroll.
