Journal of John N. Blackburn, 1814 April 16-July 28.

John N. Blackburn gives an account of his trip with his father from Franklin, Tenn., to Philadelphia to attend a church assembly, and from there to New York and return home. The two travel to Philadelphia through Virginia and Maryland and return through western Pennsylvania, Ohio and Kentucky. Blackburn briefly mentions the weather, miles travelled each day, lodgings, and preaching by his father. In Philadelphia he notes but does not describe the sights of the city, churches attended, families with whom he dined, and assembly meetings. He gives similar brief notes about attractions in New York City, where he heard Mr. [Lyman?] Beecher preach. There are two brief references to the War of 1812. In Philadelphia he attends the launching of a frigate and in Pittsburgh he sees men marching for Lake Erie. There is also a reference to a runaway slave girl who stole a horse in Ohio to escape from a man bringing her back home.
