Train running for the Confederacy [manuscript], 1892-1898, 1954.

The collection consists of a compilation of eleven articles by Anderson originally published in "Locomotive Engineering" between July 1892 and January 1898. The articles describe his wartime activities on the Virginia Central Railroad, predecessor of the Chesapeake and Ohio. The compilation may have been done by Laura E. Armitage. Topics include troop transportation and supply, and railroad maintenance. Of interest are his account of running troops from Charlottesville and from Waynesboro to meet Stonewall Jackson at Mechum's River; the subsequent run to Gordonsville, Louisa Court House and Richmond; Richmond during the Seven Days Battle; destruction and repair of bridges and track; difficulties with Confederate officers; accidents; Federal cavalry raids, particularly Kilpatrick Dahlgren with pursuit by Wade Hampton and an incident involving North Carolina surgeon Thomas E. Williams; and incidents from the battle of Waynesboro including Federal cavalry chasing the train up Ivy Hill from Mechum's Depot. There are frequent mentions of Superintendent H. D. Whitcomb, engineer John W. Whalley, free black fireman John Wesley, and events around Charlottesville, Va., and other central Virginia towns.
