Letters of James S. Easley [manuscript], 1837-1878.

The majority of the letters are from Easley to Elizabeth Easley while he was away on business and refer to his business partners, including James Bruce; land speculation; railroads and crops in the Mid-West; the Pikes Peak gold rusth, 1858; a grasshopper plague, 1875; a dinner at which James Alexander Seddon was present; the celebration in the north at the end of the Civil War; Civil War pardons and the freed slaves. There are also letters from James Easley, Jr., and Robert Holt Easley regarding life at the University of Virginia, including Ugly Club elections, itemized expenses, a Monticello visit, and a Charlottesville fire with a student theft of a fire engine, 1877.
