Letters by and about Thomas Jefferson Randolph [manuscript], 1808-1827.

Eight of the letters in the collection are from the letterbook of portrait artist Charles Willson Peale. Peale writes to Thomas Jefferson concerning a call by Thomas Jefferson Randolph, then studying in Philadelphia. Peale keeps a running record of the money sent by Jefferson for Randolph and gives a precise account of its use. He reports on Randolph's coursework and character development. Peale also writes about his own family and personal matters as well as interests in farming, science, and natural history. Peale mentions his son Rembrandt's portrait painting and his own hopes for selling the Philadelphia museum before his death. He discusses the design of the polygraph, renaming the fossils Jefferson had given the Peale museum, and implementing numerous technological innovations including windmills, corn shelling machines, mould boards for plows, clover mills, and enamel false teeth. The remaining letters in this collection are written by Jefferson, Randolph, and Nicholas Trist to the Philadelphia lawyer John Vaughan of Chapman, Vaughan and Bache. Jefferson writes introducing Randolph who is travelling north to sell some property. Randolph writes after Jefferson's death to supply requested information about his grandfather's public service record. Trist inquires about bonds issued to Randolph by the state of Louisiana.
