Papers of Lt. Samuel Thomas McCullough [manuscript], 1862-1893 (bulk 1862-1865).

Diaries and correspondence describe the Civil War service of McCullough. There are detailed descriptions of the battles of Gettysburg and Cold Harbor where he was wounded, his lengthy hospital recuperation, trench warfare before Petersburg, and capture and imprisonment at Johnson's Island. Copied into the diaries are extracts, 1861 Aug. 14 to Nov. 23, from the diary of Alfred Welton, 9th Indiana volunteers. The collection also contains an 1878 diary of notes on a tour of Virginia battle sites; a commonplace book of news clippings and souvenirs, chiefly concerning reunions and other post-war memorial events; an 1889 copy of Thomas Lewis's journal of the Fairfax line made by Jedediah Hotchkiss; and Nelly Hotchkiss McCullough's scrapbook of embroidery patterns, 1865-1893. A variety of souvenirs, chiefly Confederate memorial medals and ribbons, but also including a spur, a Confederate belt buckle, and Jedediah Hotchkiss's pocket knife, complete the collection.
