Papers of Jefferson Randolph Kean [manuscript], 1906-1950.

The collection consists chiefly of papers, 1906-1950, generated by Kean's military career including correspondence, 1906-1919, with three surgeons general and papers from his involvement with the Association of Military Surgeons, 1914-1934, including correspondence, constitution and by-laws and materials regarding membership and annual meetings. There are also minutes and reports from the U.S. Territorial Expansion Memorial Commission, and its successor the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Commission, both of St. Louis; four letterpress copybooks of outgoing correspondence, and a microfilm copy of his autobiography. Topics in the correspondence include Walter Reed and the yellow fever experiments in Cuba; Kean's tour of duty in Cuba, 1906-1907; and his work with the American Red Cross military relief and the U.S. Ambulance Service in France in World War I. Correspondents include John J. Moran, William Howard Taft (1913 August 27, 1916 April 4 and June 12), and Surgeons-General of the U.S. Army: Merritte Weber Ireland, William Crawford Gorgas and Robert Maitland O'Reilly.
