Donald Hammond joined the 6th Company of the Canadian Armed Forces in 1914. He served in the Machine Gun Detachment, Toronto Regiment, 3rd Battalion, 1st Infantry Brigade of the 1st Canadian Expeditionary Force based in France. Injured in battle (1915, Ypres), he was sent to England to recover from 2 schrapnel wounds to his forearm and chest. From the description of Donald Hammond letters, 1914-1915.
