The collection consists primarily of the personal correspondence of Frances Proctor Ames, an 1885 graduate of the University of Buffalo Medical School. Included is the correspondence to and from former medical school classmates Louise Downer and W.O.A. Langs. Also included is general correspondence from various sources such as Dr. John Eddy and the Western Pennsylvania Medical College , medical school documents, notes and pamphlets. All documents from the physical collection are represented on a CD-ROM, but not in the same order..

Frances Proctor was born in Farmersville, N.Y. on November 28, 1856. In 1862 the family moved to a farm in Portville, N.Y. It was there that she was first introduced to the idea of becoming a doctor through her mother Martha who had a deep interest in medicine and often aided the community during sickness and birth.
