Professor of French and comparative literature, Cornell University. Herbert Dieckmann was born in Germany, and received his Ph.D. from the University of Bonn. He was a member of the Harvard University faculty, and served as chairman of Harvard's Department of Romance Languages. Dieckmann was noted for his research on French philosopher and essayist Denis Diderot.
