Orders, &c. of ye House of Commons, [17--?].

Rules for conducting business in the House of Commons, passed at various times from 1553-1746, with an index by subject at the end. Included are orders governing the conduct of the members, rules for keeping good order in the building (keeping the stairwells unobstructed, etc.), and also orders concerning bills, committees, conferences, elections, petitions and motions, etc. Pages 233-235 and 245-252 give a detailed account of King Charles I's interaction with the House of Commons during his struggles with Parliament in 1640-1641. The South Sea Company was founded in 1711 to trade with Spanish America, on the assumption that the War of the Spanish Succession would end with a treaty permitting such trade. The Treaty of Utrecht, 1713, was less favourable than had been hoped, but confidence in the Company remained artificially high.
