Oral history interview with Cuthbert Corwin Hurd, ca. 1976.

Hurd discusses his work with IBM through the 1950s. Beginning with his education and early career, he tells of his work with IBM punched card equipment as a student and during World War II. He describes his involvement with scientific computation after the war as an employee of the Oak Ridge atomic energy project, and his discussion with IBM president Thomas J. Watson, Sr. of the need for high-speed electronic computers. Shortly thereafter, in 1947, IBM issued its 604, which increased the production at Oak Ridge by a factor of three. As a result of his interest in computing and IBM's in atomic energy, Hurd joined IBM in 1949 to build up a computing staff.
