A description of Spanish trade with Latin America, presented in the form of a dialog between an Irish Catholic and a Scottish Protestant. Dantiny begins with an introduction which outlines the trade between Spain and America, citing the importance of friendship and a philosophic understanding between nations for trade to be successful. The dialog follows, divided into two books. The first dialog describes the voyage of the two men leaving Cartagena on St. Patrick's Day for London. The Scot has been a resident of Cartagena since 1712 and both men begin to exchange ideas regarding Spanish trade. There is a notable difference in the ideas of the two and the Irishmen concludes that the Scotsman is somewhat rigid about his ideas on the subject of trade. The second dialog continues along the same lines but with more detail on specific topics like the sources of income and how it is broken down between the crown and the provinces. Sugar, soap, liquor, salt, wool, and tobacco are some of the products mentioned, as well as the countries of Cuba, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Jamaica, and Martinique. Spanish trading practices do come under criticism by the two, and they suggest that the crown must do more to stop the trade in contraband. Included are tables of rents and income from various provinces, as well as of taxes and distribution of wealth.
