Thomas Christie was the first missionary sent to Canada by the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland, arriving in Montreal in 1832. He preached in Kingston and the Bay of Quinte area, until the fall of 1833 when he finally settled in West Flamboro until his death in Sept. 1870. He organized churches and congregatons in West Flamboro, St. George, Eramosa, Chippewa, Beverly, Kirkwall, Guelph, Hamilton, Ancaster and Dundas. R.A. Thompson was a miller and grain merchant ca. 1885- (the firm continued in the 1950's) carrying on business at the Lynden Mills. He was a member of the federal grain commission ca. 1924. This was a major local mercantile family.
