Sixteen-year-old David Williams, who had ambitions of getting a college education and becoming a doctor, lives quietly with his hard-working African-American family on a small farm near South Town until his father decides not to accept less than the wages paid white mechanics and some of South Town's white citizens decide to teach him a lesson.
