Wrote to his political Secretary of Treasury on 17th [Jan.]; now presents himself as a critic of literature and morals; offers some sketches from "A Bundle of Facts and Anecdotes"; relates anecdote showing why a brother-officer was suddenly disabled by loss of staff of his official support; only person inimical to him was privy-counsellor; a letter was in mail before he could get at same mail by postmeridian information; thus was created and spread a report that no custom house was in operation here; this he learned by a letter from friend Whipple of Portsmouth dated Saturday 21st [Jan.].
