Letter, 1790 August 31, New York, [New York] to [William] Short, n.p.

William Short placed in charge of important financial business in Amsterdam; he must go there for the next three months; he will find out more information from the Secretary of the Treasury; the Marquis de Lafayette will take over William Short's affairs in Paris; if Short feels he is needed in Paris he must go there by express and return to Amsterdam as soon as possible; if Short thinks it is necessary he can appoint a secretary in Paris with whom he will communicate and pay 4,000 livres a year; if Short does not think a secretary is necessary, he does not have to appoint one.

William Short was born in Surry County, Virginia, in 1759, the son of William Short and Elizabeth (Skipwith) Short. He graduated in 1779 from the College of William and Mary where he had been one of the founders of Phi Beta Kappa. He acted as Thomas Jefferson's private secretary in Paris and as secretary of legation and charge d'affairs. He was minister to The Hague.
