ArchivalResource

Andrew Schindler's Alaskan travel diary on the schooner Leo, 1883.

The collection consists of a diary, compiled during a U.S. Coast Survey trip from San Francisco to Alaska and back on the schooner Leo, 18 June-7 Oct. 1883. The diary is unsigned, but a clipping identifies the author as Andrew Schindler. He describes the journey in detail, including shipboard activities, the areas they travel through in Alaska and the North Pacific Ocean, the Eskimo and Inuit natives they encounter, and his activities collecting plant specimens. He also describes their encounter with a whaling fleet, giving details of the men and their profession, and the trip's destination, Point Barrow, Alaska, where they set up a chronograph, observatory, and pendulum, which inclement weather forces them to disassemble and take back with them. Also includes six-page log, with latitude and longitude, wind, knots, and temperature readings for 18 June-7 Oct., two pages listing plant samples collected, and two pages comparing English, Inuit, and "Siberian" words. Also, clipping from v. XV, no. 13 of the University Press of the University of Wisconsin, 1 Dec. 1883, with a description of a letter Schindler wrote to the editor, describing his journey.
