Massachusetts Militia returns for six companies in the 4th Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, 1798-1804. Returns were kept in Amesbury and Salisbury by Captains Jacob Bagley, Samuel Eaton, John Morrill, Jonathan Morrill, Israel Morrill, Joseph Osgood, Benjamin Young, John Sawyer, Enoch Bartlett, Enoch Collins, John Bartlett, John Martin, and Caleb Pike. It was possible that the militia was called for the defense of the Masschusetts coast during the Tripolitan War. Papers were collected by the Wadleigh family of Salisbury but the connection to the family is unclear.

Ten companies comprised the 12th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia: five from Boston, one from North Bridgewater, one from Abington, one from Weymouth, one from Stoughton, and one from Gloucester.
