Philip Ament papers, 1947-1983.

The papers of Philip Ament primarily report on his education at Heed (Humanistic Education through the External Degree)University. He entered a Ph.D. program at Heed after retiring from his dental practice. The Ph.D. in counseling psychology was granted in 1975 based on his dissertation, "A sythesis of research in the methodology of hypnosis in medicinie and dentistry." There is considerable correspondence (1974-1975) with personnel of Heed about Ament's application for admission, Heed's accreditation, tuition, and enrollment information. There are class notes related to Ament's study for the Ph.D. (mostly handwritten), papers written by other Heed students, and early versions of Ament's dissertation. Material of the 1950's and 1960's are generally related to workshops and conferences in which Ament participated in programs related to hypnosis and dentistry. Often Ament was the lecturer. There is very little biographical information and not much documentation of Ament's dental education or of his dental practice. Professional correspondents include Ernest Hilgard, Leo Shatin, Martin Orne, Erika Fromm, and M. Erik Wright. Correspondence, publications, and other documents reflect the functions of many organizations including the Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, American Dental Association, American Society for Clinical Hypnosis, American Hypnological Association, American Hypnodontic Society, American Society of Psychosomatic Dentistry, and the American Association of Audio Analgesia. Ament's publications are in reprints from the Journal of the American Society of Psychosomatic Dentistry, and the Journal of Dental Medicine.
