The papers consist chiefly of Arabic letters to Eli Smith. Some are from local missionary co-workers and others from Druzes and Maronites. Topics include the persucution of converts, war against Egypt, and the solar eclipse of 1827. Also included are notes and short compositions by Smith in Arabic.

Eli Smith was a missionary of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions from 1826 until his death. He was stationed mainly in Beirut and is remembered as a translator of the Bible into Arabic. He traveled in Greece, Armenia and Palestine.
