David Vedder was born in Orkney, Scotland, and home schooled; orphaned at twelve, he went to sea, first as a cabin boy, later as captain of a whaler and first officer of an armed cruiser. He became a tide supervisor for various ports in Scotland. Vedder began writing poetry at an early age, and published individual poems and collections of verse throughout his life.
