La Galeria de Los Artesanos collection, 1953-2004.

Summary: Collection consists of primarily fiscal, operational, and other bookstore related business files accumulated over fifty years of gallery and bookstore operations. Joseph and Diana Stein were also active in the Historical Society of New Mexico, in downtown Las Vegas restoration projects, the United World College, and New Mexico history topics, and in supporting local history writers. The collection includes material and correspondence with many authors such as Fred Nolan, Richard Bradford, S. Omar Barker, Marc Simmons, Ann Nolan Clark, Lawrence Clark Powell and materials from illustrator Herman Ilfeld Bacharach. The Steins also collected New Mexico cookery material. A postcard collection, photos, and a small Jewish Library collection are also included. The collection retains much of the order in which it was received by the institution.

Lawrence Clark Powell was a noted writer and librarian. Powell was well-known for his writings on librarianship and the literature of the American Southwest, including books such as Books West Southwest and Southwest Classics. In 1949, Joseph Stein opened La Galeria de Los Artesanos in Las Vegas, New Mexico. It was an art gallery that sold a few books. In 1955, Joseph and Diana were married.
