James Boatwright biographical file, 1857-2005 (bulk, 1857-1901)

Biographical and genealogical information re James Boatwright (1773-1857), an owner of a cotton gin in Columbia, S.C., and his descendants, written ca. Sept. 1901, by Louise S. Boatwright. At the time of his death in 1857, Boatwright was identified as the oldest resident of Columbia, S.C., and credited with improvements to the cotton gin; this essay discusses a family legend that it was Boatwright, not Eli Whitney, who invented or refined the cotton gin. Includes copy of resolution, 13 May 1857, by D.B. Miller, "City Clerk" of Columiba, honoring Boatwright as a resident of the city for "nearly three quarters of a century," and stating that the mayor and City Council would attend the funeral service; other topics discussed include Boatwright's associations with the Taylor family and other early residents, and his extended family, with brief references to his African-American slaves. These materials were photocopied from originals in the Daniel Augustus Tompkins papers at the Charlotte Public Library (N.C.); these notes may represent a reaction to Tompkins' 1901 book, The Cotton Gin: the History of Its Invention. D.A. Tompkins (1851-1914) was involved with the textile industry in Charlotte, N.C. Includes cover letter, 6 June 2005, Charlotte, N.C., Jane Johnson to Henry Fulmer, South Caroliniana Library, USC.
