[Letter] 1831 March 23, Pittsfield, Mass. : [to] Simon N. Dexter, Whitesborough, N.Y. / [from] Lemuel Pomeroy.

Pomeroy writes to Dexter, agent of the Oriskany Factory (Oriskany Manufacturing Co.), Oriskany Falls, N.Y., to propose a meeting of woolen manufacturers throughout the country to counteract speculators in wool who are driving up the prices. He mentions that these speculators "have scoured all of the country and purchased up at from 50 to 75 cents all the good and most of the ordinary lots of wool."

Lemuel Pomeroy had considerable investments in textile mills in the Pittsfield area. Simon N. Dexter was a merchant, banker, Erie Canal commissioner and cotton and wool manufacturer. The Oriskany Manufacturing Co. was originally known as the Oriskany Manufacturing Society. It was established in 1811 by the investors of the Oneida Manufacturing Society (the first successful cotton factory in the state of New York) to manufacture woolen goods. Its name was changed in 1815. ...
