William N. Padget papers, 1910-1917

Letters chiefly written by Miss Willette Mayes from various states to W.N. Padget of Saluda, S.C.; Mayes' letters orginate from Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, and Florida; topics include women's suffrage, politics, and local news. Topics discussed include social events and activities of friends and relatives; and political topics, including comments critical of both votes for women and Teddy Roosevelt, although Mayes considered Woodrow Wilson "the best president ever." After the U.S. entered World War I, Mayes joined the Red Cross; her letters note life on the homefront, including security restrictions placed on the Gulf area near Punta Rassa, Florida, by the U.S. military in May 1917. Also including 2 photographs: image of Willette Mayes in 1909, and undated, unidentified photo that may be image of Will Padget with Mayes' parents.
