Margaret Long Papers, 1873-1954.

The papers consist of letters, a 10-year journal and another fragmentary diary, several manuscript sketches and reminiscences. They are of particular interest in that they are related to the papers of Dorothy Reed Mendenhall. The journals, which run from January 1897 to August 1907, include the years Long was a medical student at John Hopkins with Mendenhall and Florence Sabin, the year of her internship at the New York Women's Infirmary plus her first years in Denver. The entries of the late years reflect the beginning of her interest in research in Western U.S. history. Of particular interest are 150 letters to Long from Mendenhall, written before 1906, most frequently from the period in which Mendenhall was resident physician at Babies Hospital. Also of interest are 15 letters from her friend Mary A. Goodman also an intimate friend of Mendenhall.
