The collection consists of the papers of Dr. Frank Pauls, which primarily document his career as a public health microbiologist and administrator in Alaska. The collection is divided into fifteen series: 1) biographical materials, 2) education, 3) public health studies, 4) articles and papers, 5) Subject files, 6) U.S. Army service, 7) World Health Organization laboratory advisor in Iran, 8) Alaska Department of Health, 9) Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene, 10) conferences, symposia, and other events, 11) organizations, 12) health related publications and drafts, 13) photographs and transparencies, 14) audiocassette tapes, and 15) lapel pins. The public health studies include those on the distribution of blood groups in populations in Western Alaska, enteric diseases in Alaska, Eskimo blood studies for the International Biological Program in Alaska, and Frank Pauls' doctoral dissertation and research concerning strains of Herpesvirus hominis. All names of human subjects in health studies data amnd medical records in the collection have been removed.

Frank P. Pauls was born in San Jose, California in 1914. He received degrees from various institutions, including Harvard University School of Public Health (M.S., 1949), and the University of North Carolina, School of Public Health (M.P.H., 1965; Doctor of Public Health, 1966). In 1938, Pauls moved to Juneau, where he worked for the Division of Public Health Laboratories, Alaska Department of Health.
