Edward Hooker was born at Farmington, Connecticut in 1822. He entered the merchant service in 1836 and entered the US Navy on 20 July 1861 when he was appointed acting master. He served on board Louisiana and Victoria before being transferred to the Potomac Flotilla where he command Currituck, Yankee and Commodore Reed.
