Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright papers, 1898-1945.

Correspondence, circulars, notes, speeches, and miscellanous papers, 1898-1945. They pertain to such matters as: the homecoming reception for the 12th Regiment, N.Y.V., in 1899; franchise for the New York and Portchester R.R. in 1903; matters of local interest to Westchester County residents throughout his life, particularly during his years as a New York State Assemblyman from Rye, as a Senator, and a Congressman; proposals for a commission form of government; matters interesting him or coming to his attention as Assistant Secretary of War, 1921-1922; foreign affairs, particularly after 1920; activities of many veterans' organizations and memorial committees; the Philippine Islands during 1927-1930; China during the 1920s; the Committee to defend America by aiding the Allies; the developing of a New York State law for workmens' compensation, 1909-1912; the New York National Guard throughout his life; the 27th Division; and national defense, as well as other subjects. Wainwright corresponded with scores of prominent public officials, military men, church leaders, businessmen and diplomats. The collection includes the passport of his wife, Laura B. Wainwright.
